When we learn about religious attitudes to homosexuality in Year 10’s Religious Studies lessons we learn that:
- in the Catholic Church it’s okay to be gay, but don’t have gay relationships;
- in the Evangelical Church there’s the belief that nobody should be gay and that the holy spirit will save people and change them to be straight;
- in the seemingly more liberal Church of England it says it’s not a sin to be gay, that you can enjoy lifelong homosexual relationships (in other words don’t be promiscuous, which is the same message as to heterosexual/ straight Christians) yet if you are a gay minister or vicar you are only allowed a civil partnership not marriage.
Well to support what we’ve learnt in class here’s an article about a gay minister who’s been banned from leading religious services in the church because he’s got married. Jeremy Davies married opera singer McEnery, who has performed with the English National Opera and Welsh National Opera as well as teaching and composing. McEnery said the decision to ban his husband from leading services was “insulting and offensive, and doesn’t make the church look good. I dislike the idea of the church being allowed to discriminate against gay people when it is increasingly outlawed in civil life.”

The fact that some denominations in the Church are now allowing homosexual relationships proves how much the church has changed but this shows that there is still change that can be made. The topic of homosexuality is a fragile one as you have to respect the views of both sides. With some denominations against homosexuality there will always be resistance and this is an example of that. In time vicars may be allowed to participate in same-sex marriages but the fact that they are allowed civil partnerships at the moment shows that change is being made.
It’s great that in certain demominations of the church homosexuality is accepted since it shows how opinions and views have changed over time about the subject, the progression of vicars being able to have a civil partnership is also another good step towards them being able to get married. I don’t quite understand why all denominations don’t accept it since God made everyone equal and Jesus taught to love thy neighbour; so why should they not allow homosexual marriages too.
Homosexuality is a hard topic to discuss as you have to be respectful towards all point of views .Now that some denominations of the Christian faith are allowing homosexuality it proves that some churches have changed with time, but others are still sticking to traditional ruling. With some denominations not changing the outset of there religion and still not allowing homosexuality we can see that it is going to take time for same sex marriages of vicars to be allowed, but the fact that they are allowed civil partnerships shows the denominations are getting a step closer to full equality within the church
Many denominations of Christians think that to be Gay is a sin, as in the Bible it says “Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.” Despite this, lots of modern Christians, including the Church of England, think that it is not a sin to homosexual and that it is not against God’s wishes.
i dont think that your job or religion shouldn’t affect if you want to be gay or not and if you want a gay marriage. if your religion accepts gay marriage then you should not be stoped just because you are a vicar.
i think that if the religion says it is okay to get married as a gay person it should be okay to get married as a vicar.
i think that it is good that different denominations are allowing homosexuality however I think that it is wrong to say that they will not be accepted if they enter a relationship and to say that the cant get married like a normal couple. I think the progress is good and I hope that it will improve so that they can get married.

i dont think that your religion should affect if you want to be gay or not and if you want to be part of a gay marriage. if your religion accepts homosexuality then you should not be stopped just because you are a vicar.
i think this is completely wrong as a job shouldn’t affect a persons aims in life. Equality should be for all and your sexuality isn’t your choice so you shouldn’t be punished
your religion should not dictate your right to marriage if you are homosexual. also it shouldn’t stop you getting married if you are a vicar.
I strongly disagree with the fact that the gay minister had to give up on the religious research project just because he got married. Your religious status should not be judged and I believe equality should be for all sexualities and everybody should be treated equally!
