Zero Tolerance to Racism

Halfords have had to sack one employee and the other resigned before getting the chop, after the two of them were caught saying racist comments onto a customer’s phone. The two Halford employees had left a message on the customer’s phone and then failed to hang up, before making numerous racist comments which they didn’t realise were being recorded.

Which laws had they broken?

The Race Relations Act of 1976 says

“A person discriminates against another in any circumstances relevant for the purposes of any provision of this Act if—

(a)on racial grounds he treats that other less favourably than he treats or would treat other persons;”
